But before reflecting our oral presentation, I would want to first thank my awesome team for the wonderful experience throughout the whole project. The entire process has been really enjoyable and it could not have possible without the awesome team members, Sheau Shiuh, Melvis and Yongwei.

Okay, I shouldn't digress anymore. Through this experience of delivering a formal oral presentation, I managed to discover my strengths and weaknesses when I am delivering my presentation.
I believe that I am able to react very quickly to circumstances, and I realised this through the Q & A session. When being posed with questions, I realised I was able to react to them and answer them fairly quickly. Although I am not aware if the reply itself was convincing, but I was able to put my answer across in a confident manner. I guess this will be essential in my future presentation as this will enhance my credibility as a presenter.
During the presentation itself, I thought that my gestures were appropriate and were able reinforce the points that I wanted to make. Although it wasn't deliberate, I realised that my fingers were showing the numbers to the audience while I was talking about some figures and numbers. Certainly, it may or may not be a good thing to do, but I thought that at least I was able to make my point stronger through such hand gestures. In addition, I was able to make my speech much less monotone through such use of gesture.
Having said that, I think I was not able to fully conceal my anxiety during the presentation. I realised that my talking speed was faster than usual, and I couldn't stop myself from repeating myself and my words. I thought I showed signs of obvious signs of anxiety initially, although it was better along the presentation, but the anxiety could not subside completely.
I have learnt quite a bit through this experience as well. I realised that really much better to look at more friendly audience as they will be able to calm me down better. In addition, I also learnt that presentation slides are important to enhance my presentation and the overall appearance. In addition, I learnt that display of team effort in the presentation is important to increase the credibility of our case.
All in all, I believed that I have gained from the this positive experience and I certainly look forward to my presentation video. =)
Hi Dayang,
ReplyDeleteIt is a pity that I have not seen you present prior to this oral presentation. It would have been good to see how you improved with the ES modules.
Your eye contact was superb, and I felt you were calm when you presented your ideas.
From an audience point of view, you are one of the most sincere presenters that I have watched thus far. While you might not show the passion for your idea, your sincerity has shown in your presentation has already sold the idea to the audience.
I think the best way to curb anxiety in a presentation is to rehearse, rehearse and rehearse! Practise makes perfect. Guess what, there's a rumour that Apple spends 1 month coming up with their product, and 11 months practising for their keynote address!
As students, I don't think we have the luxury of time to rehearse. What I suggest to reduce our anxiety is to have some sign posting in your presentation. When doing up our slides perhaps you can include some hidden reference points that acts as guides to your next point. That is when images come in.
Another way, like what you said, could be to focus on the audience.
Thank you for your wonderful presentation. :) I have much to learn from you!
Hi Calvin!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for yourconstructive comments and I will definitely your suggestions into account and see how I can improve from here.
Great to hear that I appeared calm, but actually I was really trembling inside when I started the presentation. I guess I definitely have a lot more to learn in calming myself down.
Nevertheless, it was really an experience and I'm quite sure you enjoyed yourself too. =)
Hi Dayang, thanks for your sharing.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate the time and effort you and your teammates put in for the Oral Presentation.
Overall, I thought you pulled off a pretty good presentation. You were appropriately dressed (though you may want to consider using starch when ironing your shirt), you were loud, you appeared pleasant, you consciously made use of tone and gestures (just be more aware about the projection on your body when you gesture to the slides), and of course you knew the content well: all positive elements in successful presentations.
Your delivery would have been a very successful one if you could maintain your poise, asserting your credibility. You appeared somewhat nervous, and your verbal and non-verbal communication reinforced that anxiety. I also noted the use of ‘so’ a number of times in your presentation. You may want to consciously avoid this distracting mannerism in your verbal delivery. It will also be good to make use of the opportunity to call your audience to action when closing the Q&A session. That would be a golden opportunity to end the presentation memorably so you may want to consider that in your future presentations.
All in all, it was fine, good effort you put in, Dayang. All the best for your future presentations!
